In September 2023, Contract Mechanical Services (CMS) successfully completed its role in Project Basalt, a landmark development that included a $100M base build by Fletcher Building and a $350M plant and equipment installation managed by Canadian plasterboard equipment specialist, Gypsum Technologies.

As the lead mechanical installer for Gypsum Technologies, CMS was proud to deliver the plant installation along with the associated ducting, piping, and accessways. This critical work formed the backbone of the project, ensuring the state-of-the-art facility at Tauriko was equipped with robust and efficient systems.
Our team also undertook the assembly and installation of all flatpack items, further showcasing our versatility and expertise. Additionally, we fabricated key components such as cyclones, the kettle jacket, and various other plant elements off-site at our workshop, before transporting and installing them on-site at Tauriko.
At the project’s peak, CMS had 64 employees on-site, working collaboratively with Fletcher Building to uphold an outstanding safety record. Over the course of 22 months, CMS contributed over 100,000 man-hours without a single Lost Time Injury (LTI). This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to safety and excellence in every aspect of our work.
The successful completion of Project Basalt highlights CMS’s capabilities in delivering large-scale mechanical installation projects to the highest standards of quality and safety.
